Social Networking Certification – A Worthwhile Career Move

07-27-2011
This fall, Tangram Media and Sandhills Community College have teamed together to offer a six-week Social Media Manager Certification program for those who either own small businesses and want to maximize their profits by creating a “social landscape,” or those who may be seeking a career managing social media for businesses.

According to a New York Times article published July, 2011, Social Networking shows huge benefits for small businesses. Mueller, the author, cites one example from a local jewelry store in Los Angeles listing 70 employees who increased their sales 71 percent since introducing its Facebook page, blog and YouTube channel and now have 100,000+ Facebook likes. Yeti Coolers, another company mentioned by Mueller, says that collectively, the team spends about 20 hours per week managing their social media and the benefits have been immense.

David Blide, social media director for Tangram Media and Sandhills alumnus, will lead the instruction for the program. Blide was named as one of the 100 most influential people on Facebook by Hub-Spot and is considered one of the top in his field. In addition, Blide teaches seminars on “Social Media for Business” through the Small Business Center at Sandhills Community College. “This partnership with Sandhills Community College is a step in the right direction to educate people that social media truly can be your friend in business,” says Blide.

“Our program is the only one like it in the state,” says Alan Duncan, senior director of Business and Industry Services at the college. “We are excited about this partnership and feel that we will have a cutting edge program outlined for students that will both challenge and equip them with necessary skills.”

The course covers current theory and practical applications related to the development and management of small business social media marketing campaigns with an emphasis on research and analyzing and a review of current practices and effective strategies.

Sandhills Community College began to introducing Social Networking to its current and potential students in 2009 and currently maintains Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, YouTube accounts and photo-sharing on Shutterfly. “We also offered a class in our Center for Creative Retirement called Facebook for Seniors which was wildly popular and appears to have continued interest,” says Teresa Reynolds, senior director of Community Education at Sandhills.

Classes for this certification begin September 6 and runs through October 13 on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-8 p.m. Call 910-695-3980 today to register for this popular certification course or you may call Laura Todd at 910-695-3925 for specific questions about the program.
