August Brings Several SCC Creative Living Courses


Whatever your age, keeping your mind actively engaged is one of the most important things you can do to ensure a fulfilled life. Exercise your mind with Sandhills Community College Creative Living courses. We are dedicated to helping our students achieve their personal goals by offering a bounty of diverse classes.


It’s never too late to learn to play an instrument and no experience is needed! In Piano Beginning Level 1, students learn to play music involving C, G and middle C positions, primary triads, sharps and flats, basic rhythm patterns and how to read intervals. Class is instructed by Beverly Dunlop and is Thursdays, Aug. 25- Nov. 10, from 3-4 p.m. The cost is $55 plus text.

Piano Intermediate Level 2 is offered for students who have taken Piano Beginning Level 1or who have prior piano experience. Students will learn to play music involving C, G and middle C positions, primary triads, sharps and flats, basic rhythm patterns and how to read intervals.  Beverly Dunlop will instruct this class Thursdays, Aug. 25-Nov. 10, from 2-3 p.m. The cost is $55 plus text.

For the student with ample experience, Piano Intermediate Level 3 will teach music involving inversions of seventh chords, diminished seventh chords, sixteenth notes, diminished and augmented triads, major and relative natural, harmonic and melodic minor scales with primary chord progressions. Prerequisite: Piano Intermediate Level 2 or prior experience. Beverly Dunlop will instruct class on Thursdays, Aug. 25-Nov. 10 from 1-2 p.m. The cost is $55 plus text.

Personal Enrichment

Back by popular demand, the Fall Book Club will meet on the third Friday of each month, Aug. 19-Nov. 18, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Wood Reading Room in the Boyd Library to discuss the following books: August 19: Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, September 16: Circling the Sun: A Novel by Paula McLain, October 21: Me Before You: A Novel by JoJo Moyes, November 18: Life After Life: A Novel by Kate Atkinson. The Book Club is free, but registration is required.


Seats are still available for these classes. To register in person, stop by the Sandhills Community College Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall. You may also register by phone with a credit card at (910) 695-3980. Registration hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
