February Technology Classes at SCC

New year, new you. Whether it is brushing up on social media skills or learning to how to design a website, enrolling in a Continuing Education technology class will help you achieve your goals in 2017. Many classes are set to begin in February.

“Word 2016” provides basic concepts and skills to be productive with using Microsoft Word 2016. Learn how to use the tools on the ribbon, how to create and save files, how to format characters and paragraphs, make lists, use tabs, headers and footers, templates, and more. Beginners are welcome. A flash drive 8GB or larger is required.

“Word 2016” will be taught Feb. 28 – Apr. 6 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 8 p.m. The cost is $75 plus text. 

“Windows 10 Level 2” will provide a quick review of Level 1 and new topics will include using the Action Center and the all Settings screen, how to customize the Desktop and set up and use virtual desktops, creating folders for basic file management, and how to use File Explorer. A brief introduction to email and the Windows Store will be covered, as well as how to update Windows 10 and keep it safe. The prerequisite for this class is Windows 10 Level 1 or prior experience. A flash drive 8GB or larger is required.

“Windows 10 Level 2” will meet Mondays and Thursdays Feb. 27 – Apr. 6 from 9 – 11 a.m. The cost is $75.

“iPad Basics” will teach students to maximize productivity using many of the applications found on the iPad. Learn to set up Contacts, use Mail for checking and sending email, Messages to text business associates or contacts, Calendar to set up appointments, Camera for taking photos and making videos, as well as Notes, Reminders, Safari, and others. Also included is downloading and installing apps from the App Store. Students must bring an iPad or iPhone to class with the latest operating system (iOS) installed.

“iPad Basics” will be held Mondays and Wednesdays Feb. 27 – Apr 5 from 10 a.m. – noon. The cost is $75.

“Five Essentials for Keeping Your Computer Safe” will cover the essentials to help students set up protective measures to keep the personal data on their computer safe. Topics covered are updating software, backing up your data using cloud-based storage, virus protection, and more. The prerequisite class is Windows 10 operating system experience and knowledge of Internet usage.

“Five Essentials for Keeping Your Computer Safe” will be Tuesdays and Thursdays Feb. 7 – 23 from 10 a.m. – noon. The cost is $75. 

A hands-on course, “Social Media Basics,” will put students in the driver’s seat of a social media campaign. Learn the importance of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and more. Understand the potential for growing a business, expanding a customer base, and making more money through social media marketing. A laptop or iPad will be needed for this class. Course is open to anyone, a small business owner, employee, or anyone having an interest in expanding social media knowledge. The only prerequisite is a good working knowledge of Internet usage.

“Social Media Basics” will be held Feb. 7 – Mar. 16 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 – 3 p.m. The cost is $75.

“Creating a Free Website” will teach students how to set up a free basic website for business or personal use. Students will choose from interesting templates and will combine personal creativity along with pictures, links and content information for a finished, operational basic website. Students will also learn how to keep their website up-to-date. The prerequisite is Windows operating system experience and knowledge of using the Internet. Students must bring a flash drive to class with pre-loaded photos for website. A working email account is needed.

“Creating a Free Website” will meet Feb. 6 – Mar. 15 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 – 3 p.m. The cost is $75.

Seats are still available for these classes. To register in person, stop by the Sandhills Community College Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall. You may also register by phone with a credit card at (910) 695-3980. Registration hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
