About The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra

In 1990 jazz musician and educator, Gregg Gelb, founded and organized the Heart of Carolina Jazz Society (HOCJS), a non-profit community organization that supports the Heart of Jazz Carolina Orchestra and has been its Artistic Director ever since. Gelb, who was invited to be the Visiting Artist at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, N.C. from 1989-1991, felt the need to implement a program to acknowledge the important place of jazz performance and education.

From its inception, the HOCJS has created an annual series of free performances in schools and community series as well as an annual concert series featuring guest jazz artists of a high caliber. In its goal to achieve its mission to increase and educate as well as to build and develop the jazz audience in a wide demographic, the HOCJS has presented artists of national stature such as Cecile McLorin Salvant, Houston Person, Mike LeDonne, Sonny Fortune, Dave Valentin, Byron Stripling, Renee Marie, Valery Ponomarev, Bud Shank, Fred Wesley, Stephanie Nakasian, Hod O’Brien, Marlene VerPlanck, Stanley Jordan, Ray Vega, and Steve Turre.

The current season includes performances with Larry Coryell and a performance of the Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz Suite by Chico O’Farrell.
Members of The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra are saxaphonists Gregg Gelb, Charles Shermer, Don Larson, Pat Gallarelli, and Darin Knapp; on trumpets Gary Martin, Steve Callas, Doug Lilly, and Rob Hill; Trombonists Becca Clements, Don Wazzenegger, Steve Lucente, and George Ellwanger; pianist Gary Brunotte, Steve Boletchek on bass, guitarist Jim McCrae, and Tim Haley on drums.
