March Continuing Education Classes at Hoke Center


The Sandhills Community College Hoke Center in Raeford has a good number of classes set to begin in March. These classes range from those for unemployed or underemployed individuals, to a notary class and a free Medicare information session.


“The Pre-Employment Training” course will teach career related basics such as how to properly complete an application, write a résumé, and prepare for an interview. Students will learn job search techniques and how to be safe and successful on a job. This class is a requirement to be considered for employment with Smithfield Packing Company.


A new class, instructed by Mark Adkins, is offered the first and third week of each month, Monday – Friday at 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The cost is $75 and is waived for qualified students.


“Direct Care Basics-Phase 2” builds upon skills introduced in Phase I and progress to Include skills used in home management and personal care tasks using limited assistance. Completers will receive a Sandhills Community College certificate as a Personal and Home Care Companion. The cost is $185 and may be waived for qualified students.


“Direct Care Basics-Phase 2” will be taught March 7 – May 11 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m.


“Financial Literacy” will teach students basic economic principles and how to use them to develop the knowledge, reasoning skills, and confidence to improve their opportunities and take responsibility for their future.

“Medicare 101” is the ideal free seminar for those nearing 65 or older. Part A, Part B, supplemental insurance can be very complicated. Join NC Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) representative, Gary Knutson, as he demystifies Medicare and provides accurate and unbiased information that could save thousands of dollars in premiums and penalties. There will be a time for participant questions.


“Medicare 101” will be held on Tuesday, March 14 from 10 – 11: 30 a.m.


The “Notary Public” class certifies participants to officially authorized to witness signatures on legal documents, collect sworn statements, and administer oaths as a notary public. Participants must have a high school diploma or GED and no felony convictions.


“Notary Public” will be held March 21 & 23 from 5:30 – 9 p.m. The cost is $75 plus text.
