SCC Continuing Education Classes Set to Begin in May

Even though the month of May is the final month of spring semester at SCC, Continuing Education still has many interesting and beneficial classes with start dates during the month.

Career Training

“Alarm System Installation” introduces the operation and skill standards for the alarm industry. Topics focus on the installation, programming, maintenance and repair of alarm system wiring and equipment per applicable code, implementation of logical testing procedure for identifying system faults, and understanding general building construction. Upon completion students will have the knowledge to sit for a national certification exam as an Alarm Security Technician. Clean criminal background required to work in this field.

“Alarm System Installation” will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 13 – 14 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The cost is $185.

The “Real Estate Mandatory Update #9917” for licensed real estate salespeople and brokers will be held Thursday, May 11 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The cost is $50.

“Real Estate Elective” will meet the four-hour continuing education elective set forth by
the NC Real Estate Commission. This class will be held Thursday, May 11 from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.

“ServSafe® Food Safety and Sanitation” teaches the basics of food handling safety and facility sanitation requirements. This course is recommended for all food service facilities, including supervisory personnel, culinary professionals, and food service staff.

“ServSafe® Food Safety and Sanitation” will be held May 1, 2, 8 and 9 on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5:30 – 9 p.m. The cost is $75 plus text.

“Income Maintenance Caseworker” goes deeper into the information and strategies necessary to develop a clear understanding of the knowledge required to be successful within an entry-level position in the field of human services. The prerequisite class is Introduction to Human Services.

“Income Maintenance Caseworker” will be held May 9 – June 29 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9 p.m. The cost is $130.

Lifelong Learning Institute

“Survey of European Tortes” will teach students how to mix and bake classic European Tortes made in Chef Brunners’ native land, Austria and offer take-away tips from the professional to make three types of cakes (Sacher, Black Forest and Hazelnut) with corresponding finishing techniques.

“Survey of European Tortes” will be held May 23 and 24 from 1 – 5 p.m. The cost is $124.

Youth Enrichment

“Beginner Riding Lessons” teaches children horsemanship skills at one of the Sandhills’ favorite riding centers – Muddy Creek Farm Riding Center. Riders are paired with seasoned lesson horses and, in this six-week program, will learn basic horsemanship and riding skills such as parts of the saddle and tack, grooming, mounting, guiding, stopping and steering in the walk and trot. Riders must wear stretchable pants/jeans and boots. Ages 10-14.

“Beginner Riding Lessons” will be held Wednesdays at Muddy Creek Farm Riding Center May 17 – June 21 from 6 – 8 p.m. The cost is $275.

Technology

The course, “OS X Sierra Level 2 – Using Apps,” briefly reviews the use of the operating system and Finder. Topics also include the use of many applications that are found on the Apple Macintosh computer. Understanding and navigating these apps makes the computer a more productive tool.

“OS X Sierra Level 2 – Using Apps,” will be held May 17 – June 21 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The cost is $75.

Public Safety

“CPR for Healthcare Providers” is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

“CPR for Healthcare Providers” will be held Saturday May 20 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The cost is $50 plus a $6 card fee.

Career Development

The Pre-Employment Training” course will teach career related basics such as how to properly complete an application, write a résumé, and prepare for an interview. Students will learn job search techniques and how to be safe and successful on a job. This class is a requirement to be considered for employment with Smithfield Packing Company.

A new class instructed by Jason Davies begins Monday – Friday at 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. the first and third week of each month at the Sandhills Hoke Center in Raeford. The cost is $75 and is waived for qualified students. Call the Hoke Center at (910) 875-8589 for more information.

NCWorks Career Center-Moore County also hosts “Pre-Employment Training” classes beginning Monday morning the second week of each month. The class is Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The cost is $75 and is waived for qualified students.

Instructor, Phil Laton’s “Re-Employment Services Workshop” is designed for students who are re-entering the workforce and need to refresh their interview and employment skill set. This workshop will aid students in discovering a career that matches skills or help develop a training plan to learn new skills, explore career opportunities, and develop a written plan of action. Students will have the opportunity to create or update their résumé, customizing it for different jobs. Students will also learn to deal with the stress of long-term unemployment, sell themselves, and stand out from other applicants in an interview.

The cost for the “Re-Employment Services Workshop” is $75 and is waived for qualified students. There are two sessions per month on Wednesdays at 9 – 10:30 a.m. at NCWorks Career Center-Moore County in Aberdeen.

Seats are still available for these classes. Register in the Sandhills Community College Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall on the Pinehurst campus at 3395 Airport Road. Registration by phone with a credit card can be made by calling (910) 695-3980. Registration hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
